Biography

Jonathan Longfellow and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the poet, were both descendants of William Longfellow. Jonathan, son of Nathan Longfellow and Mary Green, was born in New Hampshire 23 May 1714.[1] He married Mercy Clark on 28 Oct 1731.[1]

In 1760, Jonathan and his family moved from Nottingham, New Hampshire to Cornwallis, Nova Scotia.[1] The Township Book of Cornwallis lists Jonathan Longfellow, wife Marcy and two of their children: Nathan and Hannah.[2]

Jonathan Longfellow received Lot 8 (66 acres), Div. 9, on the Cornwallis Township Grant 1761.[3] His name appears in the Assessment roll for proprietors of Cornwallis Township 1765, assessed 6 shillings 6 pence.[4] However, he remained in Cornwallis for only five years. In 1765 he sold his land to his son, Nathan and moved to Machias, Maine, where he remained until his death.[1]

Justice of the Peace at Machias. [5]

Jonathan Longfellow and Mercy Clark had 12 children.[1]

  1. Stephen, b. Jul 19, 1733
  2. Mary, b. Jun 15, 1735
  3. Jacob, b. Nov 6, 1737
  4. Sarah, b. Nov 17, 1739

Sep 5, 1770; Isaac, b. Sep 28, 1772. In 1782, Nathan Longfellow also removed to Machias, Me., and his property in Cornwallis was sold to Thomas Ratchford. The Longfellow name thus early disappeared from the county. The Allison Genealogy has the following note: "Mrs. Whidden (Elizabeth Longfellow) and her sister, Maria Longfellow, lie buried at Horton, N. S., in the very centre of the village of the historic Grand Pre.” Unless Maria was Mary we have no record of her birth.
