27 November 1863, Charles was severely injured. He was shot through the shoulder, with the bullet traveling through his back and clipping his spine. He did recover from the injury, but was unable to return to duty.[3]

Death

Charles had been ill for over a year when he contracted pneumonia, which resulted in his death on 13 April 1893. Charles at the time of his death lived at the old Longfellow Mansion with his sister Alice. His remains were cremated at the Philadelphia Cremation Society, Germantown, PA. [7] [8] [9] [10]
