William Wingfield Longford's 1934 article on the early Longfords assumes that this profile's Nigel de Longford III was the same person as Sir Nigel de Longford II.[1] The better sourced (and probably more reliable) 1937 Statham article on the early Longfords, however, states that Nigel de Longford II died before October 1248 and was succeeded by his son Nigel de Longford III.[2] The proposition that there were two Nigels, father and son, is also supported by the record of a land transaction from the 13th century (unfortunately exact date unknown), in which Michael de Langeford granted land to Lord Nigel son of Nigel de Langeford,[3] which is a formulation that only makes sense if Nigel de Longford III was the son of Nigel de Longford II rather than the same person.
Assuming that Nigel de Longford III was not the same person as Sir Nigel de Longford II, the parents of Nigel de Longford III were Nigel de Longford II and his wife Cecilia Hathersage.
No reliable source has been found that establishes the exact date or year of birth of Nigel de Longford III. Based on this date that his parents were probably contracted for marriage (1219) and his son Oliver's estimated date of birth (1238-1249), Nigel was probably born sometime in 1220-1230.
Nigel married a woman named Margery.[2] No reliable source has been found that establishes her maiden name. Based on Nigel's estimated date of birth (1220-1230) and his son Oliver's date of birth (1238-1249), Nigel and Margery were probably married sometime in 1234-1249.
Nigel and Margery had the following children (and perhaps others):
Nigel de Longford III died in 1274.[2]
