Govert (formal name probably Godefridus) Loockermans was the son of Jacob Lokermans and his wife Maria, of Turnhout, Flanders. He was born in 1616 or 1617, probably in France, where his father Jacob Lokermans had been living temporarily to work as a peat-cutter and to learn the French language.[1] His given name is that of Jacob's father, Goyvaert the Elder (ca. 1545/50-1628).[2]
Marriages
In the fall of 1640 Govert moved to Holland. At the time of his marriage he lived on the Prinsengracht in Amsterdam, now Ariaentje had become a widow, he was able to marry into the firm, which he did without hesitation. In the fall of 1641 he returned to New Netherland on board of the ship De Coninck Davit, together with his wife and Hendrick Van de Water, her son from her previous marriage.[3]

Death
Govert Loockermans died in New Amsterdam in 1670 or 1671 (the source for the death date of May 18, 1671 on this profile is not clear). He left no will, which suggests that his death was unexpected; it was unusual for a man of substantial wealth to die without a will.[8]

↑ Frijhoff, pp. 9 and 38. Many researchers give Govert's birthdate as July 2, 1612, based on the baptism on that date of Godefridus, son of Jacob and Maria Lokermans, in the church of Saint Peter in Turnhout. However, in 1633 Govert was reported to be 16 years old, and in 1639 he was reported to be 22 years old, indicating a birthdate in 1616 or 1617. There is no record in Turnhout of a birth to this family during that period, but Frijhoff reasons that this can be explained by the family's residence in France at the time of Govert's birth.
