Biography

Frederick Looker is an Anzac who served in World War One.

Lance Corporal Frederick Keith Looker was born on 23rd July 1885 at Yambee, Neerim Road, Murrumbeena, Victoria (Australia). He was the third son of George Looker and Fanny Dickson. [1] He was educated at Malvern Grammar School (now a campus of Caulfield Grammar School). [2]

Early in the new century, the twentieth, Frederick obtained employment as a bank accountant. [2]


On 3rd April 1915, Frederick enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force for service overseas during the First World War. [3] He was allocated to the 22nd Australian Infantry Battalion, then being raised as a unit of the 6th Brigade, 2nd Division. The battalion embarked for Egypt on 8th May and deployed to Gallipoli in the first week of September; allowing elements of the 2nd Brigade to be rested from their positions in the front trenches, including Frederick's younger brother, William (who would be killed in 1916 at France). Frederick gained promotion to Lance Corporal.

LCPL Frederick Looker died of illness at Malta during The Great War.

Frederick was evacuated from Gallipoli to St George's Hospital at Malta and died there of jaundice on 15th November 1915. He is buried nearby in the Pieta Military Cemetery, Tal-Pieta, Malta. Frederick Keith Looker's name is located at panel 97 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra. [4][5] After the war, his family were presented with the 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, and the Victory Medal.
