Biography

Elliott Leander Loomis was born in Indiana October 24, 1840 and died at Gibbon, Nebraska October 16, 1925 with a burial in Riverside Cemetery with full military honors.

He moved with his parents from Indiana to Iowa when he was 18 years of age. In 1860 he joined the Second Iowa Cavalry and when his term of service expired, he re-enlisted, serving 5 years in the Civil War. Elliott served in the Union Army in the Civil war, Iowa cavalry 2nd Company, F, Regiment as a full Saddler, and Buglar.

Coming to Nebraska in 1880, he settled at Central City and in 1895 moved to Shelton where he resided for 1 year and then came to Gibbon where the balance of his days were spent. He engaged in the teaching of music until his health prevented following this line or work.

From DEATH notice: On March 30, 1895 he married Leona A. Tague and to this union 6 children were born, one of whom died in infancy. He is survived by his wife and 5 children:

  • Robert R. Loomis, Gibbon, Ne.

His grandson, Rollin Loomis reported that his first wife was Cemantha Fleming. He also reported that Elliott was an independent astrophysicist.

The 1880 Census from Iowa reports that he was a beekeeper and that his birthplace was Michigan and that his parents were both born in New York.

Loomis-1372 and Loomis-3147 appear to represent the same person because: Same wife, same birth location, need to resolve birth month difference

Loomis-1936 and Loomis-1373 appear to represent the same person because: Hi, these are the same person. I was getting ready to add Walter and Amelia as parents when I discovered you already had them.

I am a descendant of Elliott Loomis and his first wife Cemantha Fleming.
