Sailed from Boston 23 October 1819 with his wife, Maria Theresa Sartwell to the Sandwich Islands (Hawai'i) with the first group of white missionaries to visit those islands. He was a printer by trade and did pioneering work in reducing Hawaiian to a written language, printing Hawaiian spelling books, hymnals, and tracts, and teaching native English and Hawaiian, and with religious instruction, sermons, and conversions. His son, Levi Sartwell Loomis, was the first white child born in the Hawaiian Islands.
