Biography

Margaret was born in 1758 in Augusta County (later Botetourt), Virginia, a daughter of Absalom Looney^[1] and Margaret Eleanor Moore.

She married Alexander Caldwell in 1778^[2][3] and had several children with him before he passed away in 1830^[4][5].

Margaret passed away between 1830 and 1840^[6][7].

Little more information is currently available for Margaret Looney. Can you add to her biography?

Regarding the exact date of her marriage, we have good records^[2][3] of the January 1778 marriage bond, but we also have reports elsewhere of the marriage taking place in July of that year (this present profile represents a merge of Looney-209 with Looney-1559; the earlier profile listed the later marriage date, and vice versa). We find in one secondary source the rumor of a plausible reason for the discrepancy^[8]. We can, at least be certain we have the year right^[9].

In a similar manner, we have conflicting notions of when Margaret died. The newer profile before this merge (Looney-1559) had a precise death date of 5 Nov 1830, but the only source cited was another web site^[10] which itself does not provide a verifiable source. We do know that Margaret survived her husband^[4][5][7], and was possibly still around as late as 1836^[11], but other than that, we are lacking hard evidence.
