Messick's father was Michael Loper (Lowber) III and Dorothy "Dolly" Messick from New Hanover Co., North Carolina.

Some researchers show his name as Levon Messick or Messick Levon Loper.

He married Scarberra Delong about 1769 in Colleton District, South Carolina.

The family moved with other families to the newly formed state of Mississippi around 1817. In 1820 they were in Perry Co. and then moved on to Jones Co. where Messick died. Some went into Greene Co. and others into Jasper Co. where Scarberra died.
