Biography

Bruna López Y Medina was born on 1 July 1895 in Las Piedras, Puerto Rico to Vicente Lopez Y Castro and Zoila Medina Y Vazquez.[1] Zoila was unmarried and farmed her own land—unusual for a woman[2] On 13 May 1912 Bruna married Pascual Lozada Y Diaz in Las Piedras.[3] They had 14 children, Pascual working in the cane fields to support their family.[4] In 1925 they lost their infant son Victor Manuel at birth because of congenital defects.[5] Francisca is absent from the 1930 census and they may have lost her in childhood as well, though Paula and Justiliano aren’t present either, and we know they died later, so maybe they were taken in by other family to help out. In 1930 they lost their 8-year-old son Modesto to endocarditis (infection of the heart).[6] In 1931 they lost the 6-month-old Carmen due to enteritis.[7] Pascual became a retailer around 1935 with Angel and Domingo working in the business.[8] Although Angel would become a farmer and Domingo a carpenter.[9] Their son Domingo died in 1966 of heart disease.[10] Pascual died on 1 Nov 1979 in Las Piedras of a pulmonary embolism.[11] Bruna died on 13 January 1987 in Las Piedras of natural causes.[12]
