Francis was born in 1910 at Mt Magnet, Western Australia.
He enlisted in the Australian Army (Militia) on 27 Apr 1937 at Newcastle, NSW as a Private (267257). At the time he was single and a clerk with Peters American Delicacy Co in Newcastle. He was 6ft & 1/4 in tall. He was allocated to 2nd/35th Bn, "D" Coy. On 01 Jul 1937 he was appointed L/Cpl. He was transferred to 17th Bn on 01 Jan 1938.
On 03 Jun 1939 he married Marie Holman Richards at Wolstonecraft, NSW.[1]
He then served with 1 RA Bde as N313898 for a time before enlisting for overseas service as NX31037 on 08 Jun 1940 in Sydney. He was allocated to the Australian Army Service Corps. He was a cost clerk and storeman and was married to Marie. He was appointed A/Cpl on 01 Jul 1940 and A/Sgt on 14 Nov 1940. He disembarked in Rabaul in the Territory of New Guinea from the HMT Katoomba as a member of 8 Div Supply Column.
When the Japanese invaded New Britain in Jan 1942 and was captured at the Wide Bay Coast and became a prisoner of War. He died on board the "Montevideo Maru" when it was torpedoed and sunk off the coast of the Philippines on 01 Jul 1942 en route from Rabaul to Hainan where he was destined for forced labour.
