Frédéric was born in Lorraine, France.[1][2] He was the younger brother of Duke Godfrey of Lorraine.[3]
He was abbot of Monte-Cassino.[2]
He was elected pope on 2 August 1057 and crowned the following day taking the name Stephen IX.[1]
He was the son of Gozelo I of Lorraine, and Junca of Italy. [4]
He died on 29 March 1058 in Florence after a papacy of only 7 months and 8 days.[1][2]
