Biography

Horace Was born in 1828. He is the son of Howard Lothrop and Sally Williams. He passed away in 1898.[1]

In the early 1800’s, the two principal industries in Sharon, Massachusetts were the knife works established in 1835 by the Ames family of Easton to be later operated by H. A. Lothrop & Co.; and a substantial cotton duck mill built by George H. Mann. Stoneholm, now at 188 Ames Street, was built by Horace Augustus Lothrop in 1848[2]. Source of the granite was Moyles Quarry in Sharon.

Death of Horace A. Lothrop

Horace Augustus Lothrop died at his home, 1741 Massachusetts Avenue, on Sunday. Mr. Lothrop was born in Easton in 1828, and was the son of the Hon. Howard Lothrop, a man prominent in business and political affairs of his time. He was the youngest of a large family, of whom Cyrus Lothrop, of North Easton, is the only surviving member. He was a brother of the late Hon. George Van Ness Lothrop, appointed minister to Russia by President Cleveland, and of the late Mrs. Oliver Ames. In 1847 Mr. Lothrop moved to Sharon and began the manufacture of cutlery, establishing the firm of H. A. Lothrop & Co. This firm continued with increasing proportions and prosperity until 1883, when Mr. Lothrop was compelled to retire from active business in consequence of impaired health. In 1870 he was Instrumental In establishing the firm of Lothrop & Watson, manufacturers of shoe shanks[3], but relinquished his Interests some years later. In 1878 he founded the Niantlc Hosiery Company. The plant was entirely destroyed by fire soon after that date.
For 35 years Mr. Lothrop was a director In the Neponsot National bank, of Canton. He was a member of the Massachusetts legislature for two terms in the early sixties, and, although having no desire for political office, he maintained a controlling influence in town affairs for 30 years. He was one of the original promoters of the Sharon Water company and of other town improvements. As a rest from business cares he devoted much time to agriculture and horticulture, and owned extensive farms and greenhouses. He came to Cambridge to reside a few years ago, purchasing the home of Ex-Alderman J. W. Fairbanks. Mr. Lothrop was married twice and leaves a widow and seven children. The funeral was held Tuesday noon from his late residence. [Cambridge Chronicle, 17 December 1898]

280. Horace Augustus, born Apr. 3, 1828, and married (1), in 1850, Susan J., born Feb. 22, 1832, daughter of Albert A. Roach of Easton. She died May 5, 1860. He married (2), Apr. 13, 1864, Sarah G., daughter of William C. Swain of Nantucket, Mass. As soon as he attained manhood, he engaged in the manufacturing business in Sharon, Mass., which he carried on with enterprise and success until about 1883, when he sold his works.
