Before the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, Robert was settled in the Mohawk valley, in Tryon County.
"The inhabitants of Tryon County were, to all appearance, among the most loyal and contented. Their representatives, Gov William Johnson and Hendrick Frey, had never swerved from their allegiance. Governor Tryon visited the valley in 1772, and wrote rapturously of the evident prosperity and contentment of the people, “who were not less seemingly pleased with the presence of their Governor than he with them.” He reviewed the militia and reported that it exceeded 1,400 men under arms. The great proprietors and wealthy families here were Loyalists to a man. Besides the members of the Johnson family, the Bradts, Freys, Hares, Herkimers, Thompsons and Youngs, John Butler, Joseph Chew, John Dease, Robert Lottridge, Hendrick Nelles, Peter Ten Broeck, Alexander White, and many others, imperilled handsome estates, which in the end were confiscated."[1]
Robert was a Captain in the British Indian Department and fought with the Indians on the British side in the Revolutionary War.[2][3] During the war, his wife and children were held prisoner by the rebels.[4] By the end of the war, December 1783, Robert Lottridge, age 34; Mary Lottridge, age 30; John Lottridge, age 13; Robert Lottridge, age 11 are all listed in the Return of the Persons under the description of Loyalists Specifying the Number, Age, Sexes and Number of Rations Drawn by Familys in the Indian Department, Niagara, 1st December 1783.[5] Robert's wife Maria must have died shortly after their arrival, because Robert is listed on a 1786 Loyalist list with three boys over two years of Age and one under two, also with a servant but without a wife.[6] The servant girl is believed to be Sarah Ryckman who he married shortly after this, and she bore him a daughter before his own death in 1790.[7] Robert's widow and sons had to fight through about a decade of petitions before getting satisfaction from the government and receiving all their due lands.[8]
