Census of 1871 shows James(28) and Rachel(28) living at 13 Mary Street, Port-Glasgow with daughter Jeanie aged 5, He is working as a Moulding Machine Keeper.

Census of 1881 shows James(38) and Rachel(36) living at 13 Mary Street, Port-Glasgow with 6 children, Jeanie(15), Martha)12), James(10), Samuel(6, Alexander(2), Daniel(2). His trade is given as a Joiner and he was born in Ireland.

Census of 1891 shows James(52) and Rachel(48) living at 13 Mary Street Port-Glasgow with 4 children, James(19), Samuel(15), Alexander(12, Daniel(12) the daughters are not living with them, maybe married. he is still a Joiner.

The birth certificate of his son Samuel says he was a Joiner Journeyman and that he married Rachel in Ireland 29th March 1861.

The marriage certificate of their son Samuel says that he was a Sawmiller and noted that he was deceased.
