Biography

Lottie Mae Love was the daughter of John Alexander Love and Clara Bruan Love. Her father was born in Maryland and her mother was born in Pennsylvania. Lottie Mae was born in January of 1891, in the state of Pennsylvania. [1]

At the age of nine, Lottie was living with her mother, Clara (age 32), and her little sister Gertrude (age 2). They were residing in Newberry, York County, Pennsylvania. Clara lists herself as the head of the household, married for 12 years and the mother of four children with two of them still living.[1]

In 1910, Lottie (age 19) had moved with her mother and sister to the town of York Haven in York County. Lottie's mother was the proprietor of a retail store. Clara (age 42) still lists herself on the U. S. Census as being married and the head of the house. Lottie's sister, Gertrude is 12 years old. [2]

Lottie (age 19) married Bernard Wade Raine (age 24) on May 3, 1910, in York, Pennsylvania. [3] [4]

In 1916, Lottie gave birth to a boy who they named Robert. Robert was a preemie and he died two hours after birth. [5]

By the time of the 1920 U. S. Census, Lottie Mae Love Raine (age 28) and her husband, Bernard (age 34), have been married for about ten years. The couple are making their home in the town of York Haven, with three children. Bernard is working as a papermaker in a paper mill. They own their house free of any mortgage. [6]

At the end of the year in 1920, on December 8, Lottie and Bernard lost their second son, Herbert (age 8), to an acute appendicitis. During the next ten years, Lottie and Bernard continue to live in York Haven and Bernard is still at the paper mill. Lottie had three more children: [7] [8]

  3. Louisa M. Raine Diehl (age 3)

Published in the York Daily Record of York, Pennsylvania, on April 17, 1972, was the announcement of Lottie's death. Lottie (age 81) died on a Saturday morning at 8:03 a.m. at Memorial Osteopathic Hospital in York, Pennsylvania. [9]

Lottie out survived her husband, Bernard. Five of her children survived Lottie's death. Lottie was a Lutheran and was a charter member of the Ladie's Auxiliary of Susqehanna Fire Company. [9]

Research Notes

  • The 1900 U. S. Census is the only document that lists the state of birth for Lottie as New York. All the other sources have Pennsylvania as the place of birth. However. Lottie's obituary in the York Daily Record states that she was actually born in Watertown, New York. [9]
  • The birth certificate for Lottie's son, J. Preston Raine, records the place of birth for Lottie May Love as Pennsylvania. [10]
