DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Charles by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Charles:

After scrolling through many family trees on Ancestry I thought it was about time to write this. So, getting right to the point, it is my contention that the Charles Love who died in Cabell County, West Virginia is not the same Charles Love who was a Revolutionary War participant. Yes, despite the fact that his military record is stated in a few books and despite the fact that there is a commemorative stone in Cabell County and despite the fact that he is in the DAR and SAR. This all started because of a mistake made by a few people at least a hundred years ago and maybe faulty family histories. Let me explain my reasoning. Although I`ll mention various sources I`m not going to hyperlink them. They are easy to find for anybody who is interested.

Let`s look at the Rev War pension application itself. It is posted on quite a few sites so I won`t repeat the whole thing. The main point is that Charles Love applied on June 15, 1818 in Pendleton County, KY. According to him he enlisted sometime in March 1777 in Philadelphia and was discharged March 5, 1778 at Valley Forge. And he enlisted as a substitute for Bean Smallwood in Capt Berry`s company. As it turns out this company was formed mostly of men from the Frederick County area in northern VA. Quite a few people requested an application for Charles Love in the 1920s and 30s and were sent this one. They were all ancestors of Charles Love of Cabell County WV and assumed the pension which had no family information was his.

On 16 Sept 1802 in Shenandoah County, VA Gabriel Amiss married Judah (Judith) Love, Daughter of Charles Love. Frederick and Shenandoah share a border. This Charles Love family including his wife, Eleanor (Nelly), children and son-in-law Gabriel moved from VA to KY before 1805. Charles is in the 1810 and 1820 Pendleton County, KY census as is Gabriel. Importantly, Charles is listed in the Pendleton County tax rolls every year from 1805 through 1823. Starting in 1824 his widow Nelly or Eleanore is listed as owning the same land after his death in 1723/24. She disappears from the record about 1830. Ironically it looks like he died about the same time as WV Charles Love. But note the pension was applied for in KY on June 15,1818. In the 1869 SAR Year Book, Kentucky Society the following is included: Love, Charles private Virginia line / Date placed on roll, Sept 16, 1819 / Date pension began June 15, 1818 / Amount of Pension $96 / Age pension began 67 / County, Pendleton.

In the meantime in Cabell County, WV on Oct 3, 1809 a land appraisal was done for Hannah Hutcheson by, among others Charles Love and son William Love. There is no 1810 Cabell County census but there is a reconstructed one based on tax records. Once again importantly, Charles Love appears in the Cabell County tax rolls every year from 1809 until his death in 1824. And his son William is there with him. He sold his land in Mecklenburg Co VA in 1804 and moved to the Cabell Co area in 1804/05. So, what are the odds that the Revolutionary War pension didn`t belong to KY Charles Love, long time continuous resident of Pendleton Couty, KY where it was filed but to WV Charles Love, long time continuous resident of Cabell County? People have either ignored Pendleton County or have bent over backwards through the years to come up with scenarios to explain this but none are tenable.

The above two paragraphs are key. If you take nothing else from this I would think this in itself would be enough to prove we are talking about two different Charles Loves. He obviously can`t be a resident of Pendleton County Kentucky and Cabell County West Virginia 150 miles away at the same time. And no, WV Charles Love didn`t go to KY to file his application.
