John Love is conjectured to have been born in Campbeltown parish in Argyllshire, Scotland. On the basis of his marriage to Agnes MacSporran in early 1803, and his possible death in Glasgow in 1824, aged 40 years (rounded), it may be conjectured that he was born before 1784, perhaps late in the decade before that.
John married Agnes (aka Ann) MacSporran on 27 Feb 1803 in Campbeltown[1].
The baptismal registers in Campbeltown parish church record that John and Agnes had six children all baptized there:
The baptism of a second daughter named Margaret suggests that their firstborn child may have died in infancy or childhood; there is no record of the death or burial of any child named Margaret Love in the parish registers. If the court transcription information about Daniel being the youngest in his family is correct, it suggests that his younger sister, Margaret, may have died before 1833.
There are no further children of John and Agnes recorded in any Church of Scotland baptismal register anywhere in Scotland. It is conjectured that the family moved from Campbeltown parish to Glasgow sometime between 1814 and 1824.
John Love, is conjectured to have died in Glasgow City around 14 Jul 1824, his aged was recorded as 40 years (presumed rounded like the other entries on the register page)[2].
This information is 'guessed". On son Daniel's marriage and death certificate he states his (Daniel's) birth was in Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland, his father was John Love (whose profession was a "Linen Weaver") and his mother was Ann McPherson/ Agnes Macsporran (handwriting faded and hard to read). We know that Daniel was the youngest (living) child in 1833 (at the time of his trial) and had older siblings (from convict transcripts), and that his father was dead by the time he was 19. Dates are estimated.
The birth date and place of John Love has not been definitively ascertained. There are 8 males with the name John Love baptized in the Campbeltown parish of the Church of Scotland between 1775 and 1785. These include the following with their parents indicated. There is no definitive way to decide which of these married Agnes MacSporran in 1803 and was the father of Daniel Love and his siblings.
If Scottish naming patterns are considered it might be conjectured that John's first son, James, might have been named after his father, and that his second son, John, might have been named after Agnes' father, Donald. However, neither of these conjectures holds true. It might be that John's second (John) and third (Daniel) sons were named respectively after his father and Agnes' father. However all this is speculative and the identity of John's parents are not further advanced.
