CP VIII:203 states Richard was the brother of Henry who m. Christian, not his son:
Richard Lovel, br. and h.(a) Scutage was demanded from him at the end of Oct. 1217.(b) On 25 June 1218 he had livery of the barony of Cary, his inheritance.(c) He took part in the successfui campaign against Llewelyn in Wales, under the Earl of Pembroke, in 1223.(d) In 1224 he released his claim to pasturage in Aldingbourne to the Bishop of Chichester.(e) In 1225 he was one of the assistants to the sheriff in conveying to Winchester Castle the money collected in Somerset for the fifteenth granted to the King.(f) He took part in Henry IIIs futile expedition to France in 1230.(g) In 1231 he had a charter of free warren in Cary.(h) He contributed to the scutage in Dorset and Somerset in 1235-36.(i) He confirmed his fathers gifts of the advowson of Castle Cary to Bath,(j) and of land in Hawick to St. Andrews,(k) and his mothers grant of land in Pidecombe to Bruton Priory.(l) He is returned as holding fees in Storrington, Sussex, and Stourton, Wilts, in 1242-43,(m) and (as _dominus Ricardus Lupellus_) the barony of Cary in chief in 1251-52.(n) In 1254 he was charged on 18 fees in Somerset for the aid for making the Kings eldest son a knight.(o) He m. Alice, whose parentage is unknown.(p) He d. before 21 Jan. 1254/5, when the escheator was ordered to take possession.(q) On 17 Oct. 1256 the marriage of his widow Alice was granted to Nicholas de Haversham.(r)

Walter acknowledged the fees and land to be the right of Richard; for this Richard gave him 25 marks of money and a palfrey and 2 goshawks.[1]
25 June 1218 Tower of London. Somerset. Order to the sheriff of Somerset that, having accepted security from Richard Luvel for rendering to King Henry the relief that he owes for the barony of Cary, which is of his inheritance, he is to cause him to have full seisin without delay of all his lands in Somerset.[2]
1229. Sumerset. — Walterus de Esselegh, Johannes de Reyny, Henricus de Ortiaco et Ricardus Luvel attornati sunt justiciarii ad assisam de morte antecessoris capiendam apud Ivelcestre -------. Richard Lovel assigned as a junior justice to hear a case of morte antecessoris at Ivelcestre. [3]
30 March 1231 Marlborough. Rex per cartam suam concessit Ricardo Luvel pro se et heredibus suis quod idem Ricardus et heredes sui in perpetimm habeaot liberam warennam in dominicis suis de honore de Kary. Et mandatum est vicecomiti Sumerset' quod predictam cartam id pleno comitatu suo legi, et wareonam illam secundum tenorem predicto carte clamari faciat et teneri.[4]
The King, by the charter granted to Richard Luvel for himself and his heirs, will always have a free warren on Sundays in honour of Cary. Mandate to the sheriff of Somerset to cause the aforesaid charter to be read in full in the county, and that the warren to be proclaimed and bound according to the terms of the aforesaid charter. No date [April] 1231 Kent. Richard Luvel gives the king 5 marks for having his charter for having a certain warren in his demesne lands of the honour of Cary according [to that which is contained] more fully in the Charter Roll.[5]
1235-1236. Dorset - Ricardus Luvel reddit compotum de j. feodo in Parva Frome. In thesauro j. m. et debet j. m. Richard Lovel gives account of 1/2 fee in Little Frome Paid into treasury, 1/2 and debit 1/2 mark. [Latin translated as comprehended by C.J. McD.][6]
3 November 1237 Westminster. Thomas, prior of Bath, querant, and Richard Luvel, impediment; for the advowson of the church of Castelkary. Richard acknowledges the right of the Prior as being the gift of Henry Luvel the father of Henry Luvel, whose heir he is; to hold in frank almoin. And the Prior received Richard and his heirs into all the benefits and orisons of his church in Bath for ever.[7]
