Biography

Christened at Hurley in Berkshire, on the 14th of January 1564/65, [1] Richard Lovelace was the eldest son of Richard Lovelace of Hurley and his wife, Anne Ward. He was educated at Eton 1583, and at Merton College, Oxford in 1584, aged 16. [2] [3]

He married, on the 5th of August 1600, Catherine Gill, daughter of George Gill of Wyddial in Hertfordshire, and widow of William Hyde of South Denchworth in Berkshire. [4] No children were born of the marriage. [3] Richard was knighted in Ireland on the 5th of August 1599 by the Earl of Essex. [5]

He was first returned to Parliament as member for Berkshire in 1601 [6] and succeeded his father in 1602. [3]

In 1607 he was admitted to Gray's Inn. [3]

His second wife, whom he married on the 28th of April 1608, was Margaret, daughter and heiress of William Dodworth, Merchant Taylor of London.[7] Together they had at least 2 sons and 3 daughters. [3]

Richard was created Baron Lovelace of Hurley on the 30th of May 1627. [3] He died on the 22nd of April 1634. [3]
