Railroad entrepreneur, Colorado pioneer resident, Lt Gov of Colorado, served in Mexican-American War (Illinois Volunteers wagonmaster), School of Mines Board member, Mayor of Golden (1874-75), owned Rocky Mountain News in 1878, helped found cities of Lakewood and Golden,, Colorado

He married first Philena Shaw on 13 May 1852 at Macoupin County, Illinois, USA - they had a son, Francis W. Loveland (1853-1853)

After the death of Philena, he married Miranda Ann Montgomery in 1856 - they had a son, Francis William Loveland (1857-1921), named for his older half-brother
