Edward worked his father's grocery store. The family lived in Marcellus, Cass, Michigan.
Edward developed the product "Tidy Cat Litter". Originally inside cat owners used dirt, sand or ash in the litter boxes. In Michigan in 1947, Lowe's neighbor asked to borrow some sand for her cat litter box. Instead he offered ‘Fuller’s Earth’, a clay minerals mixture capable of absorbing clay weight in water. The neighbor loved the way it worked. Ed figured he would try to sell the substances and call it ‘Kitty Litter’. It was tried as a give away in pet stores and when it was so popular, it went on the market.
By 1964, he founded Edward Lowe Industries for manufacturing the product. It was renamed ‘Tidy Cat Litter’.
