Edward worked at his father's grocery store. The family lived in Marcellus, Cass, Michigan.
Edward developed the product "Tidy Cat Litter". Originally, owners of inside cats used dirt, sand, or ash in the litter boxes. In Michigan in 1947, Lowe's neighbor asked to borrow some sand for her cat litter box. Instead, he offered ‘Fuller’s Earth,’ a clay minerals mixture capable of absorbing clay weight in water. The neighbor loved the way it worked. Ed figured he would try to sell the substances and call it ‘Kitty Litter.’ It was tried as a giveaway in pet stores and when it was so popular, it went on the market.
By 1964, he founded Edward Lowe Industries for manufacturing the product. It was renamed ‘Tidy Cat Litter.’
