George, Ann, and Mary Jane (Mercy's daughter) were living in the household of John Idle in Jefferson City, Missouri, in 1860.

George enlisted in the Union Army 6 Nov 1861 in Jefferson City and was mustered into Company K, 47th Illinois infantry, 31 Dec 1861. He was mustered out 6 Oct 1863 (died of hepatitis in the regimental hospital at Vicksburg, Warren County, Mississppi).[6][7]
