Mary was born in Heanor, Derbyshire, England ^[1] on 5th November 1831 (as per her baptism record). She is the daughter of Benjamin Lowe and Sophia Storer. Mary was christened with her younger sister Sarah on 1st December 1835 at Slade Chapel Primitive Methodist Non Conformist church, Ilkeston, Derbyshire, England, UK. ^[2]

In 1851 Mary was living with her parents and 3 siblings in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire. Her father was a colliery labourer. ^[1]
