Joseph was born 10 June 1914 at 39 Sunderland Street, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England [1]
In the 1921 census Joseph (age 7) was the son of John William Lowe at 39 Sunderland Street, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England.[2]
He studied at Macclesfield Grammar school and Central School, passing the Higher School Certificate examination in 1932. [3] He attended the Newtown Methodist Church since childhood. In 1935 he was a local preacher on the Methodist Circuit, he taught in the Sunday School and was a leader of the Christian Endeavour. [4]
He studied at Manchester University, receiving a BA in 1935, BD in 1938 and MA in 1939. [5]
In July 1936, he was unanimously recommended for training for the Methodist Ministry, for which he attended Hartley Victoria Theological College in Manchester. [6][7][8] In 1937, he conducted the funeral services for his grandmother Annie Lydia Slack. [9]
He received his first appointment as a minister of the Methodist Church, which would commence in September 1939 while stationed at Hartlepool, County Durham as a junior minister. [10]
In the 1939 register, he was a Methodist Minister living at 28 Belmah Street in West Hartlepool, Durham, England [11]
Joseph married Edith Alexandra Eleanor Smith (1912-2002) on 8 February 1941 at the Newtown Methodist Church on South Park Road, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England [12][13]
In 1950, he was a Methodist Minister living at 24 Hockliffe Street, Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, England [14]
He completed Ordination Training for the Church of England at St Aidan's Birkenhead in 1956, was ordained a Deacon in 1957 at the Parish Church of Lache with Saltney, Chester, Cheshire and Priest in 1958. [5]
He was the Vicar of Sutton, Macclesfield, Cheshire from 1959 to 1964, Vicar of Bushbury, Wolverhampton from 1964 to 1967, Vicar of Shelton with Oxon, Shrewsbury, Shropshire from 1967 to 1974. He was a Surrogate (Deputy to the Bishop) in the Diocese of Lichfield from 1965. [5]
He was a Hospital Chaplain in Shrewsbury, Shropshire from 1974 to 1979, when he retired. [15]
Joseph died while on holiday in Greece in 1989. [16]
