Biography

Col. Nicholas Lowe, Gent., was a younger son of John Lowe, Esq., and Katherine Pilkington.[1][2][3][4][5] He was baptized at Denby, Derbyshire, England on 30 April 1651.[1][6]

Nicholas was an attorney, planter and merchant who immigrated to Calvert County, Maryland, about 1674, and settled in Talbot County[1] by 1686.[7] He was admitted to the Talbot County Court in 1698 and the Queen Anne's County Court in 1709.[7] Nicholas was raised in the Catholic faith, but was a Protestant convert by 1694. He was styled "Gent." by 1697.[7]

He was a legislator, serving as a member of the Lower House in Talbot County, 1694/5-1696, 1699, 1704-1707, and 1708-1711. He served in local offices (Talbot County) as Coroner 1686-1689; Clerk 1686/7-1689; Justice 1694; Deputy Commissary 1695; St. Peter's Vestry 1696; and Sheriff 1696-1698. He had the military ranking of Major by 1704 and Colonel by 1708.[7]

At Maryland's first election, Nicholas held a land patent of 2,650 acres in Talbot County in 1695/6.[7]

Marriage and Children

Nicholas Lowe married Elizabeth Roe, widow of Major William Combes and daughter of Edward Roe.[1][3][5][7] They had three sons and five daughters:
  1. Sarah,[3] married first John Long and second John Patterson.[1][5][7] No birth record found, but she had a child by 1701, so was likely born by 1683. She was named in her mother's will.[8] See research note
  2. Mary,[3][5] married first John Allen, second Rev. William Glen, and third Thomas Bozman.[1][7] She was born 7 July 1691.[9] She was named in her mother's will[8]
  3. Elizabeth, married William Wood.[1][7] She was probably the unnamed daughter born 12 October 1693.[10] She was named in her mother's will[8]
  4. Prudence, married Andrew Price.[1][3][5][7] She was born 9 September 1695.[11] She was named in her mother's will[8]
  5. Nicholas,[3][5] Gent.,[1] was born 28 February 1697,[12] died 1745, married Margaret Turbutt.[7] He was named in his mother's will[8]
  6. Dorothy, married Francis Harrison.[1][3][5][7] She was born 11 October 1700.[13] She was named in her mother's will[8]
  7. Vincent,[1][3][5][7] twin, born 24 February 1702.[14] He was named in his mother's will[8]
  8. Henry,[1][7] twin, born 24 February 1702 and died 2 September 1704[15]

Death

Nicholas died at Talbot County, Maryland on 22 October 1714.[1][7] He left at least 2,150 acres of land and personal property valued at £938.13.7 (including 28 slaves), with a final balance after his debts were paid of £338.4.5 (the estate had insufficient personal/moveable property to meet the outstanding charges against the estate).[7]
His wife left a will that was proved 11 November 1719 which named several of her children:[3] sons Nicholas and Vincent; daughters Mary Bozeman; Dorothy Harrison; Sarah Pattison and her sons William and Thomas Long; Elizabeth Wood; and Prudence Price; and grandchild John Glen. Also mentioned were daughter Elizabeth Combs and her son William; and David, son of David Robinson and "daughter-in-law" Judith Robinson and her son Edward Combs. Her son Nicholas and friend David Robinson were named executors.[8] It appears that Edward Combs was the son of Elizabeth and her first husband. Edward married Judith Goldsbourgh and after Edward died, Judith married David Robinson. See Talbot/Combes 1600s and Talbot/Combes 1700s for more on Elizabeth's side of the family.

Research Notes

Daughter Sarah

Some online trees say that Nicholas had a first wife, Ann _____, with whom he had a daughter, Sarah. No evidence of this has been found; however, it would make sense of the large gap in Nicholas' children's dates of birth. Alternatively, Sarah could have been a daughter of Elizabeth by her first husband, William Combes. More research is needed. See this page for an analysis of Elizabeth's will.

update: merge completed

Lowe-3228 and Lowe-3199 appear to represent the same person because: same death date/location, same sources. one profile has correct parents, the other has his wife & children (incorrect parents were detached). See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Lowe-3199#Research_Notes

Please merge.

Thanks!

update: detached Henry & Prudence as parents & proposed merge.

Hi! The Gateway Ancestor Nicholas Lowe who married Elizabeth Roe was the son of John Lowe and Katherine Pilkington.

Henry is the son of Vincent Lowe & brother of John Lowe (father of Nicholas m Roe). I cannot find anything about a Prudence Lowe.

I'll be disconnecting the parents in order to merge this Nicholas with Lowe-3228.

Cheers, Liz
