Biography

Col. Henry Lowe was a younger son of John Lowe, Esq. and Katherine Pilkington.[1][2][3][4][5] He was baptized 10 July 1652 at Denby, Derbyshire, England.[1][6]

Life in Maryland

Henry was a planter and merchant. He immigrated to Calvert County, Maryland in 1674 and settled in St Mary's County[1][3] by 1695.[7] Henry was a legislator serving in the Lower House, St. Mary's City, 1701-1704. He served in the provincial offices of naval officer for Patuxent District 1684-1685 and Justice of the Provincial Court 1694-1697.[7] He held local offices in St. Mary's County as well, including Sheriff 1698-1700, Justice 1709, and Clerk 1709-1717 (the 1709 appointments were made by Edward Lloyd, Henry's brother-in-law: Henry likely was unable to serve in public office from 1704-1709 because his wife and daughters were Catholic). He held the military titles of Lieutenant Colonel from 1697/8 to 1704 and was a Colonel by 1712.[7] He was Commander of the St. Mary's County militia in 1696 and served as and Deputy Commissioner in 1697.[3]
At Maryland's first election, Henry held 10,915 acres of land in Maryland.[7]

Marriage and Children

Henry Lowe married to Susanna Maria Bennett, daughter of Richard Bennett and Henrietta Maria Neale[3][5] and widow of John Darnall.[1][7] Their marriage contract was dated 18 May 1686[1] and the couple was married before 4 September 1688 (land record).[8] Susanna Maria had one child by her first husband, a daughter Henrietta Darnall.[7] The couple had four sons and seven daughters:
Henry's wife Susanna died 28 July 1714 and was buried at Fenwick's Manor in St. Mary's County.[3]

Will

Henry's will dated 25 October 1717 names the following children: sons Henry, Jr., Bennett, Thomas, and Nicolas; daughters Ann, Elizabeth, Henrietta Maria, Dorothy, Mary, and Susanna Maria wife of Charles Diggs. He named sons Henry and Bennett as executors.[11] His will was proved in St. Mary's County, Maryland on 6/14 November 1717.[3][11][12] His total estate value at death was £7,236.8.10 (including 68 slaves and 3 servants) with a final balance after his debts were paid of £6,238.19.1. He held a total of 11,138 acres of land in Cecil, Kent, Prince George's, St. Mary's, Baltimore, and Charles counties, plus a tract in the Tuckahoe Creek area of the Eastern Shore and one in Kent County, Delaware.[7]

Thanks Michael! I added the trails to this profile last month but did not do a re-review of the profile, so all the data in the bio still needs to be verified. I've added this profile to our Post-1500 Team spreadsheet that lists profiles needing work.
