Biography

Ivy Lowe was born in Feilding in 1894 to William Lowe and Myrtle (Jane) Johnson (1) She attended school in Feilding (2). Family recollections (5) mention Ivy saying she had been adopted by a Mrs Tingey of the Tingey Paints family. Possibly this refers to the period when Ivy’s father was away and, as a child, Ivy may have been sent to live with Mr and Mrs Tingey, who lived nearbye and ran a pharmacy in Feilding (confirmation needed). Around 1911 Ivy’s family moved to Auckland and Ivy appears to have gone there around the same time. She worked as a chorus girl for Fullers Vaudeville and married Matthew Jones in 1913 (3) when she was 19 and Matthew was 21. At the time of their marriage Ivy was pregnant with her first child Thelma (biological father Fred Wyatt). Ivy had two more children (Ronald and Clarence) before separating from Matthew some time between March 1918 (4) and 1921 (6, 6a). Matthew raised the children at his parents home in South Taranaki. Ivy moved to the South Canterbury area. She had two further children (Myrtle (Ann) and James (Jim)) before becoming housekeeper for Winfred Moffat (5). Ivy and Matthew were divorced in 1924 (6) and shortly after she married Winfred (7). They raised Myrtle and Jim and had three children of their own (Dennisse, Eric and Rex). Ivy passed away aged 56 in 1950 (8). Her memorial incorrectly gives her age at death as 49, likely due to a family story that she had been born in 1901 (5).
