Sarah Lowe was born on her parents' farm in Surry County, North Carolina in October 1850. She was the daughter of Isaac Lowe (1811-1886) and his wife, Matilda (Moncus) Lowe (abt.1817-1879).
On 12 February 1867 Sarah married John Wiley Snow (1848-1936) in Surry County, North Carolina, USA. [1] The couple had a farm in Stewarts Creek, Surry County, North Carolina, where they had 8 children:
On the 1880 US Census, Sarah Snow was recorded as a 28-year-old white woman, married to John W. Snow, 30 years old; they were living with 3 sons: Isaac, Brice [James Byrd], & Pascal Snow; and 2 daughters: Fannie & Lucinda Snow, on their family farm in Stewarts Creek Township, ED 175, Surry County, North Carolina, USA. John W. Snow "Works on Farm," indicating he rented or share-cropped the land. Both John & Sarah were declared illiterate. [2]
The 1890 US Census was accidentally destroyed and not available. Some time between the 1884 death of their daughter, Fannie Ada Snow, and 1890, John and Sarah Snow moved to Carroll County, Virginia. There they separated and divorced. John W. Snow remarried to Martha Jane (Davis) Higgs in Virginia on 11 February 1890. [3]
Sarah (Lowe) Snow also remarried in Virginia to widower Eli Madison "Matt" Alderman, born in 1840, on 14 May 1898. They had no children together. They were recorded as Eli Alderman, age 60, born in May 1840 in Virginia, married to Sarah (Lowe) Alderman, 50, born in Oct. 1850 in North Carolina. They were living on a rented farm with Eli's youngest son, Robert Alderman, age 9, in Fancy Gap District, ED 1, Carroll County, Virginia, USA. Eli Alderman was a "Farm Laborer," indicating he did not own his farm. The couple declared having been married for 3 years and Sarah stated she had had 8 children, 7 of whom were still living in June 1900. It was the 2nd marriage for both Eli and Sarah. [4]
Sarah (Lowe) Snow Alderman passed away after 1900 but likely before the 1910 US Census as neither she nor Eli M Alderman have been found on it either in Virginia or North Carolina. She has a Find A Grave Memorial but no death or burial information. [5]
