Two of her brothers went west during the Gold Rush of 1849 and were never heard from again. She was never taught to read or write and it was a great source of embarrassment to her. She married her first husband in 1850 or 1851 (Logan Beard). Logan was very cruel to her, often beating her. Her father begged her to leave him which she would not do. Finally, however, he tied her to a tree in the woods after beating her. She was terrified, and when he released her, she got word to her father who came and got her, and she did divorce him.
