Alexander Lowery

According to the biography of Alexander Lowery found in "The Heritage of White County 1806-1999," his father was Charles Lowery Sr. who had come to TN from Franklin Co., PA. We know from his headstone application filed by Mrs. R.L. Hill on 28 Sept., 1939 in Sparta, that Alexander Lowery served in the Revolutionary War as a militiaman in the 2 Batt. from Augusta Co., Virginia. This document states he enlisted 28 Dec., 1782 and was discharged 1884. From his military record we know he also served as a Colonel in the 2 Reg. of the West TN Militia in the War of 1812. We know that Alexander Lowery was in Tennessee on 25 May 1790 because his marriage to Amie Gist was recorded in Greene Co., TN. Alexander Lowery and his wife and children were in White Co. around 1800 because he appears in the public records of Smith, Jackson, and Overton Counties before White County was formed in 1806. According to our source, "Alexander helped to lay out the new city of Sparta, giving land on the east side of the Calfkiller River...He was a wealty landowner... and the west part of Sparta was probably on his family farm. In addition to his land holdings he operated a ferry across the Calfkiller, was elected as one of the first town commissioners, and was a trustee for White Co.'s first school, Priestly Academy."
