Biography

Matthew Byers Lowes was born in 1835 in Middleton in Teesdale, Durham, England to Robert Lowes and Susannah (Byers) Lowes - he was christened on 23 Aug 1835.[1]

In 1841 Byres Lowes (age 6) lived at Newbiggin in Middleton in Teesdale with his brother William (20) and sister Nanny (15).[2]

In 1851 Byers Lowes (age 16, Farmer's Son) lived in Alston, Cumberland with his brother-in-law Thomas Hodgson (26, Lead Miner And Toll Collector), sister Ann Hodgson (25), niece Elizabeth Hodgson (0), brother-in-law's sister Mary Ann Hodgson (20, Servant), and sister Mary Lowes (9, Scholar).[3]

Matthew Byers Lowes married Phoebe Coatsworth in 1856. The marriage was registered in Teesdale in the second quarter of the year.[4]

Matthew and Phoebe had five children:

  3. John Lowes (1861-)
  4. Matthew Byers Lowes (1863-)
  5. Mary Elizabeth (Lowes) Johnson (1866-)

In 1861 Matthew Byers Lowes (age 26, Lead Miner) lived at Heathery Clough in Stanhope, Durham with his wife Phebe (25) and son Robert (2).[5] Their older son, William (4), lived in Newbiggin, Durham with Phoebe's mother Phobe Cotsworth.

In 1871 Matthew Byers Lowes (age 36, Lead Miner And Farmer) lived in Middleton with his wife Phoebe (35, Lead Miner's Wife) and three children: Robert (12, Scholar), Matthew Byers (7, Scholar), and Mary Elizabeth (4, Scholar).[6] Their other sons, William (14, Scholar) and John (9, Scholar), lived in Newbiggin in the household of Pheobe's uncle John Coatsworth.

In 1881 Matw Byers Lowes (age 46, Lead Miner Small Farmer) lived in Forest And Frith, Durham with his wife Pheobe (44, Lead Miner Wife) and four children: Robert (21, Lead Miner), John (19, Lead Miner), Matthew B (17, Blacksmith), and Mary E (14).[7]

In 1891 Matthew B Lowes (age 55, Butter Dealer) lived in Stanhope with his wife Phoebe (54), son Robert (31, Farmer), daughter Mary E Johnson (24), granddaughter Sarah E Johnson (4), and servant Mary E Emerson (17, General Servant).[8]

Matthew's wife Phoebe Lowes passed away in 1896.

In 1901 Mathew B Lowes (age 66, Farmer) lived in Stanhope with his son Robert (39, Breaking Whinstone), daughter Mary E Johnson (34), and granddaughter Edith Johnson (14).[9]

Matthew Byers Lowes passed away on 25 Apr 1903, aged 68 years. His death was registered in Weardale, Durham in the second quarter of the year.[10]

"LOWES Matthew Byers of Ireshopeburn Stanhope county Durham died 25 April 1903 Probate Durham 8 March [1904] to William Watson rate-collector Effects £815. Resworn £880."[11]
