Biography

George Lowman was born on July 24, 1738, in Kent County, Maryland. He was the son of Samuel Lowman and Honour Crowley. He married Mary Thornton about 1763 in Adams County, Pennsylvania. They had nine children during their marriage. Mary’s son, John, whose father was of the Shamokin tribe, was treated as a son by George.

After their marriage, in 1770, they bought land in the “Northern Neck” of Virginia. They raised a family on their Virginia farm and apparently prospered. They were farmers but also probably supplemented their income as teamsters on the great wagon road that passed by their farm. On April 25, 1796, George and Mary Lowman sold their Virginia farm. On January 4, 1798, they purchased 425 acres of land in Hamilton, Bann Township of York County, Pennsylvania; in 1800, this area was renamed to Liberty Township, Adams County. This newly-purchased land was quickly transformed into a prosperous family farm, with the help of stepson John and son George. George Lowman died on November 24, 1800 in Adams County, Pennsylvania. His final resting place is no longer known.
