Biography

Jane was the daughter of Bryan Lowry and Mary Glendinning. She is purported to be born in 1719 in Hartburn, Northumberland, England[1] She is purported to be baptised on 31 Jan 1720 in Hartburn, Northumberland, England[1]

She married David McCord who was born in Ireland but, came to Pennsylvania as a boy with his parents.

Known Children:

  1. David, went to Virginia and then settled in Washington Co., Tennessee. He then moved to Williamson Co. Tennessee in 1809.

Among the children of David who settled in Mecklenburg County, NC were John McCord (c. 1732-1809) and Jane McCord (c. 1738-aft. 1797, Mrs. John Ritch/Ritchie).

  1. James
  2. Jane/Jean
  3. Margaret
  4. John
  5. William

She and her husband David were killed on the 4th April 1758 when Indians attacked in Ft. McCord in Lancaster County (now located near Edenville, Franklin County, Pennsylvania).

They captured four of Jane's children; David, James, Jane/Jean and Margaret; they were released a year and a half later. John McCord, son of Jane, was in the barn feeding the horses and the Indians did not find him. William, another son, out ran the Indians.

Several of the children went with their Uncle John (The Shepard) to Virginia and on to North Carolina.

Jane Lowry did not die in the raid, she was 8 months pregnant and she was taken along with all the children, forced to abort the child and it was used to toss agound alive until it died. she was taken to Toronto and sold to the French, was released and it took her a year to get back to philly where she wrote about it. you can buy the journal online.

she lived years after,, she even had Davis Jr, sue the courts for her to re-own and sell the homestead as women could not own property
