Went to college at St. Johns Cambridge in 1702, the same year his father died who was also named Richard Lowther and Rector of Swillington. Wife believed to be Mary Sye or Lye, who he married 5 May 1712 at Winteringham in Lincs. His Alumni record states that he was appointed Chaplain to the Prince of Orange. He appears to have been involved in trading with Rotterdam, and was appointed to the English Church built there with assistance from the political clout of the Lowther family. He was also Rector at Swillingham, even at the time of his death when he was in Rotterdam. The family's involvement with Holland began in the 1640s with his grandfather, William Lowther, who later became MP for Pontefract, but moved to Swillingham around the time that the British monarchy was restored.
