Notes

Note N422The following data was obtained from "The Complete Loy History Website, http://www.fortunecity.com/millenium/paddington/63 and Thomas Stoner, cuda@oeonline.com. Much of it is confirmed in the book "The Loy Family in America" by Jennie Stewart which refers to the legend that John George, John Heinrich, Mathias and Christofer were brothers. John George (Hans Jurich) Loy born 1705 in Baden Germany and wife Maria Elizabeth (Troud) born 1708 in Germany arrived in PA from Germany on the ship "Elizabeth" 17 August 1733 with George's 13 year old brother John Heinrich Loy. By way of Holland, he migrated to New York State. During the controversy between the Lutheran and Dutch Reformed Churches, he migrated to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, near what is now the Berks County line, since the birth records of his three oldest children are found in the records of "Moden Krick" (Muddy Creek) Lutheran Church which is about one mile east of where Schwartzville now is, on U.S. Route 222, about 20 miles Northeast of Lancaster and 12 miles Southwest of Reading. On June 11, 1737, he was one of a syndicate of six men who contracted with Benjamin Tasker, Lord Baltimore's agent, to purchase 7,000 (seven thousand) acres, known as "Tasker's Chance," on the west side of the Monocaccy River in Prince George (now Frederick) County, Maryland, where Georgetown now is, for 2,000 pounds sterling. He settled on a part of this tract, built a grist mill and became a prosperous and prominent citizen. He was one of six wardens who signed the Constitution of the famous Monocaccy-Frederick Lutheran Church whose records are preserved in the Lutheran Seminary, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and are full of records of him and his family. He remained a pillar of this organization until his death between August 1, and September 15, 1765. He left a will of record in Box 3, Folder 19, Hall of Records, Annapolis, Maryland, naming all of his children and sons-in-law. There are many civil records, deed, administration reports, grand jury records of service by him and his wife, Maria Elizabeta.

John George (Hans Jurich) Loy (ca. 1705 Baden, Germany-1765-68 Frederick, Frederick Co., MD) md. Maria Elizabeth Troud (ca. 1708 Germany-1758-1765 Frederick Co., MD) d/o Hans Martin and Judith Troud. George (Hans Jurich) and wife Maria Elizabeth (Troud) arrived in PA from Germany on the ship "Elizabeth" 17 August 1733 with George's 13 year old brother John Heinrich Loy. George's will was dated 1 August 1765.

A man named Daniel Dulany was in charge of settling land purchases in western MD. He had bought land there and re-sold it to many of these Germna families. Daniel Dulany was listed in my child's fifth grade history book at school as the person who did these transactions in western MD. He sold portions of Tasker's Chance to John George Loy.

Now for John George Loy. In the history books of Frederick County, MD. there is verification that he arrived in Philadelphia on August 17, 1733 on the ship Elizabeth, along with wife Maria Elisabeth Trout and his younger brother Johan Henrich Loy, who was only 13 at the time.

They were in the company of many other future Marylanders: Hans Peter Hoffman, Frantz Weiss, Georg Freidrich Unseldt, Jacques bonet, and the Trout family, most of whom later lived on or near Tasker's Chance. Their first two children, Maria Rosina and Jo. Jacob were born in the northern part of Lancaster county, PA, where they lived upon first voming to America. Both were baptized by Pastor Stover at Muddy Creek Church. The pastor wrote that they were from Warwick, near the present day Brickerville. This differs from the note I sent earlier. I said Breckersville, I believe. These are two different towns in Lancaster county, PA, (only an hour an a half from where I live in MD.). However, there is a Warwick March near Breckersville, PA which is southeast of Reading, PA. Brickerville, however, is west of both Cocalico Township and Myerstown, both known as towns where Loys lived. All three of the latter towns are southwest of Reading, PA.

The 3rd child may have been born near Muddy Creek Church in PA, because the pastor entered his name in the church books. But, unlike the first 2 children, who were baptized within 2 months of birth as was custom, the third child was baptized at 6 months of age or later in the Frederick county, MD area. Other notes have her born at Monocacy in MD on Dec. 11, 1738, bptzd on June 17, 1739 as Anna Eliesabetha Ley.

Frantz Weiss had come to MD by 1736 and it is believed that John Georg's family followed Weiss to MD by 1737, traveling with Peter Hoffman and wife Maria Appoloina. Both Weiss and Hoffman were noted in the Muddy Creek church book and both were present at the baptism in 1739.

Benjamin Tasker was the original owner of Takser's Chance. He listed John Georg Loy along with 5 other Germans as persons trying to buy all of the Tasker's Chance tract on June 11, 1737. On July 28, 1746, John George Loy bought 215 acres of Tasker's Chance from Daniel Dulany. The land was situated west of US Highway 15 and south of Willow Road.

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John George by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John George:
