Her mother died in 1874, when Louise was about 6 or 7 years old. She and her younger brother were admitted to the Randwick Home for Destitute Children by their aunt on 26 May 1875, the same year that their father remarried. Louise was apprenticed to the institution in 1880 when she was 12 years old.
She married James Thomas Lye in 1912 when she was about 44 or 45 years old.
