Natalicio Lozada Y Medina was born around 1881 to Angel Lozada Y Pintor and Julia Medina Y Flores.[1] On 9 August 1902 he married Paula Rosario Y Diaz.[2] He worked as a carpenter for over 40 years, at least until he retired in 1959.[3][4][5] There's also a record of his working as a farm laborer, and as a farmer of his own land.[6][7][8] Natalicio and Paula had at least 8 children: Carmen, Alberta, Amelia, Cristino, Eladia, Natividad, Aurelio and Lucia.[9] [10] [11] [12] [13] [14] [15] [16][17] Natalicio is listed as a widower on the 1935 census, and on 24 April 1944 married Rita Martinez Y Rodriguez, so Paula probably died before 1935.[18][19] There's evidence Natalicio had seven more children: Leandro, Felipe, Isaac, Rafael, Felix, Isaias, Octavio but the record is ambivalent about their maternity.[20][21][22] Natalicio died on 25 April 1955 in Las Piedras, Puerto Rico of stomach cancer. He was survied by this wife Rita Martinez and buried in the Las Piedras Municipal Cemetery.[23]

1930 US Census - Natalicio Lozada Y Medina, Age 45, is enumerated as head of household Montones, Humacao, Puerto Rico with his wife Francisca Santana Y Rosario, Age 40. Also present is their child, Ysaias, Age 17; and Natalicio's sons by a previous marriage: Felix, Age 19 and Octavio, Age 15.

1935 Puerto Rico Census - Natalicio Lozada Y Medina, Age 53, is enumerated as head of household Montones, Humacao, Puerto Rico with his son, Felix, Age 26, and Candelario Cruz, Age 5, a boarder

1940 US Census - Natalicio Lozada Y Medina, Age 60, is enumerated as head of household Montones, Humacao, Puerto Rico with son Octavio, Age 27, his wife Petra Rosa, Age 21, and their child Luis Lozada Y Rosa, Age 0, and Cándida Medina, Stepdaughter, Age 9

Research Notes

Public records establish Carmen, Alberta, Amelia, Cristino, Eladia, Natividad, Aurelio and Lucia, born from 1908 to 1921, as definitely the children of Paula Rosario and Natalicio Lozada.[24] [25] [26] [27] [28] [29] [30] [31] Yet the 1910 Census lists Francisca Santana Y Rosario as Natalicio's wife of 2 years, having given birth to 6 children, 4 living and listing as their children Felipe and Isaac Santana Y Rosario, born in 1908 and 1910.[32] The 1930 and 1940 Census adds Felix, Isaias and Octavio, born from 1911 to 1915. Given the appellation of "Rosario" we might still assume Felix and Octavio were born to Paula[33][34] However, his son Felix is the informant on Natalicio's death certificate and his surname there is "Santana" which suggests he's 's the son of Francisca who never married his father.[35]

Are these different Natalicios? Given the places, names, and dates that seems unlikely. Or did Natalicio have two separate households with two different wives? The 1910 and 1930 Census refers to the relationship with Francisca as "consensual contract" i.e., common law marriage.[36][37] While a record of marriage exists for Paula and Natalicio[38] So maybe Paula was the wife and Francisca a mistress? Natalicio was listed as a widower in the 1935 census and did marry Rita Martinez Y Rodriguez in 1944[39][40] There is also a stepdaughter, Candida Medina, listed on the 1940 census which suggests yet another marriage.[41] And the 1920 census does list a Rosa Martinez Y Medina as the wife of Natalicio with Leandro, Rafael, Isaias and Octavio as their children. But given Rosa is listed as born in in 1890, she would be too young to be the mother of Leandro.[42] Trying to make sense of all this is not easy.
