Biography

Ruth was born in Leigh, Essex, England, on 23 December 1907.[1][2][3][4] She was the daughter of Reginald Lubbock and Lilian Swift. In 1911, she was resident in the household of Nevile Lubbock (her grandfather), whose address was Oakley, Bromley Common, Kent. The census record shows that it was a large household, with nine Lubbocks and ten servants.[5][6] Between July and September 1931, she married Thomas Marshall Bell, a general practitioner. Her son Michael Nevile Marshall Bell was born on 11 Oct 1933 at Hendon Buckinghamshire. Her son Robin John Marshall Bell was born on 21 Feb 1935 at Marylebone, London. In 1939, she lived at 255 Belle Vue Road, Southbourne, Hampshire. After her husband retired, she lived at 5A, Stourwood Avenue, Southbourne, Hampshire. She passed away on 13 Nov 1976 after a short illness.

Ruth flew out to Tenerife each winter for a bit of sun (in the days when air travel was a lot more expensive). She taught herself Spanish and could speak it fairly well at a basic level. She had a glass-fronted cabinet in her house full of things she had brought back from her holidays: shells, samples of volcanic sand, pressed flowers, etc.

Ruth did not suffer fools gladly. One year, the family, including Ruth, visited a country fair in the New Forest. One of the attractions was a ride in a pony and trap. We paid the fare and got in, but the driver couldn't make the pony move. "Allow me", said Ruth, seizing the reins. The driver was obliged to get down, whereupon Ruth drove the trap round the field. It's very likely that she knew how to ride a horse - she wasn't at all shy around them.

According to family oral history, she was sent to finishing school in Lucerne, Switzerland. Unfortunately I have not been able to find any evidence for this.
