Biography

Church of Ireland Clergy

Thomas Luby was born circa 1800 at Clonmel, County Tipperary, Ireland, the son of Thomas Luby and Eleanor Fogarty. Luby was descended from a Huguenot family which fled from France in 1685 and settled in Canterbury. [1]

He was educated by Mr Clarke and entered Trinity College Dublin on 3 June 1817, aged 18. Sch 1819, B.A. 1821, M.A. 1825, Fellow 1831, B.D. and D.D. 1840. [2]

Ordained a Deacon, at Cloyne, 19 September 1830 ; Priest, at St. Mark's, Dublin, by the Bishop of Ferns, in 1831. He was elected to junior fellowship at Trinity College Dublin in 1831, was awarded the degree of DD in 1840, and co-opted a senior fellow on 6 November 1847.

While in the college he held various positions – chaplain, censor and junior dean, bursar, senior dean, senior lecturer, Donegal lecturer (1832–47), and professor of Greek (1852–5). He was also the examiner in mathematics for the school of civil engineers which he had called to be established in 1841.

Author of "Elements of Trigonometry,'* Dublin, 1825 ; and of " A Treatise on Physical Astronomy," London, 1828.

Thomas married (1) Mary Anne (Marianne) Wetherall in 1824.

  3. Eleanor b. 7 July 1828, married Thomas Sadleir Stoney in 1857.

Mary Anne died 23 May 1829, aged 28.

Thomas married (2) Jane Rathborne of Dunsina, daughter of Henry Rathborne and Jane Bayly, on 2 July 1840.

  5. James Rathbone b. 10 Oct 1850
  6. Mathilda Juliana b. 5 Jun 1852 married on 3 Dec 1874 to Frederik Johann Emanuel Baron Huyssen van Kattendijke
  7. Penelope Jane b. 20 Nov 1853 married on 21 Oct 1882 to Henry Tudor Parnell
  8. Frederick William b. 12 Dec 1855
  9. Thomas b. 6 Sep 1857

Thomas died on 12 June 1870 at Dublin, Ireland.

The will of Rev Thomas Luby late of 43 Lower Leeson street, Dublin, Doctor of Divinity S.F.T.C.D. proved by oath of Letitia Florence Luby, spinster, one of the executors. [3]
