Judge Daniel Bedinger Lucas was named for his maternal grandfather Lieutenant Daniel Bedinger, Bedinger-25 who was an officer and a prisoner of war during the American Revolutionary War. His father, William Lucas built the family estate, "Rion Hall" around the time that Daniel was born. The third floor was added later. Daniel's mother died a few years after moving into their new home, leaving four small children. William Lucas did not remarry, and died in 1877, leaving Rion Hall to Daniel. [1]
Born March 16, 1836, died July 24, 1909, Statesman, Jurist, Soldier and Poet.[2] Daniel was best remembered for his poem, "The Land Where We Were Dreaming." The poem, in its entirety may be found online here: http://www.bartleby.com/297/198.html
Daniel is buried in the churchyard of the Zion Episcopal Church, in Charles Town, Jefferson county, West Virginia. There is a biography of some length on his Find A Grave memorial. [3]
