Martha Lucas was born February 14, 1850, in Woodford county, Illinois. Martha married William Anderson Sparks, and was the mother of 15 children.

IN MEMORY OF MARTHA (LUCAS) SPARKS ^[1]

Mrs. W.A. Sparks passed away on Monday at her home at Mt. Etna, after many weary months of suffering from an incurable malady which had undermined her rugged constitution. The funeral was held last Wednesday at the Dunkard church at 2:30 o'clock and was conducted by the pastor, Elder Harry Rogers. Interment was made in Forest Hill cemetery [Mt. Etna, Adams County, Iowa].

Martha Lucas was born February 14, 1850, in Woodford county, Illinois, and at the time of her death was aged 71 years, 3 months and 29 days. She grew to womanhood in the vicinity of her birth and at the age of 20 years she removed with her parents to Carthage, Mo., where she was married to W.A. Sparks on May 14, 1871. Soon after her marriage the family removed to Nebraska where they resided until about 1900, then removing to Iowa, locating near Carl and later to Mt. Etna, where she spent the remainder of her life with the exception of a couple of years which she spent in the homes of her children in Nebraska.

To Mr. and Mrs. Sparks were born fifteen children, four dying in infancy and Charlie at the age of 16 years and is survived by her husband and ten children who are as follows: Mrs. Cora Lyons and Abner Sparks of Taylor, Neb.; Ernest Sparks of British Columbia; George Sparks of Brandon [?], Can.; Asa Sparks of Holdredge, Neb.; Harvey Sparks of Bowbells, N.D.; Mrs. Clara Fox and David Sparks of Mt. Etna, Iowa; and Noah and Miss Stella at home. Also three brothers and two sisters at Eureka, Illinois, and fourteen grandchildren. In very early life Mrs. Sparks united with the Christian church and lived a life of helpfulness to others until a few years ago since when she failed in health. Decreased was a splendid woman, kindly neighbor and friend, and one of the best mothers and wives and will be greatly missed, especially in her home."
