Biography

Jesse K. Lucas was born in 1807, in Greene county, Ohio, one of twelve children born to Abraham Lucas and Mercy (Kelsey) Lucas. In 1825, Jesse's father, Abraham Lucas, moved his family from Ohio to Sangamon county, Illinois. Three years later, they moved to a farm on the Lake Fork. "Here the old people died and several of their children are buried in the Steenbergen cemetery." [1]

Jesse married in Sangamon county, Illinois, Jane Bowman, daughter of Richard and Mary Bowman. In 1828, Jessie and Jane settled first on the farm later owned by Caleb K. Lucas. About ten years later, they moved to the farm, in Mt. Pulaski Township, Logan county, Illinois, where he died December 6, 1874. They were the parents of nine children:

  • Sarah Lucas, born March 24, 1829, died May 7, 1855, married Alfred Scroggin, buried in Steenbergen Cemetery
  • Richard B. Lucas, born December 5, 1830, died May 19, 1914, buried in Rosehill Cemetery Rockwell City, Calhoun County, Iowa
  • Abraham H. Lucas, born July 8, 1833, married 1) Mary J. Brock and 2) Phebe A. Landis
  • Mary Jane Lucas, born February 3, 1836, died February 3, 1919, married Robert B. Conaway, buried in Steenbergen Cemetery
  • Arminda Lucas, married J. Nicholson
  • Marcy Lucas, married William Chrystolier
  • Thomas Lucas, died in infancy
  • Hannah E. Lucas, married John Roberts
  • Phebe Lucas, born May 31, 1850, died April 12, 1910, never married, buried in Steenbergen Cemetery
