Biography

This profile is part of the Lucas Name Study.

Charles Augustus Lucas was born on March 20, 1836 in Bruton, Somerset, England, United Kingdom, son of John Lucas (~1809–1873) and Mary Marsh (1813–1868).[1] He was baptized on October 30, 1836.[1]

Emigration He emigrated from the UK to NZ as a 19 year-old arriving in Nelson on the "MAORI" on 23 September 1855. He escorted out his widowed aunt (Jane Cox) with her two sons and one daughter.

Charles shifted to Lyttleton Oct/Nov 1856 and worked as a compositor on the Lyttleton Times. His editor was Crosbie Ward who later went into politics. Charles must have admired him very much as he named his sixth son after him.

Charles (20) married Emily Day (20) (daughter of Bryce Day) on March 14, 1857 in Lyttleton, Canterbury, New Zealand. She was born in 1836 at Clifton Bridge in Bristol, England, and emigrated to NZ arriving at Nelson on the JOHN MASTERMAN on 8 February 1857 from London. ...Charles ...it would seem was responsible for paying at least part of her fare as 10 pounds was owing with Charles and his Uncle as sureties. She soon moved to Lyttleton and they married.

Their children were:

About 1860 Charles purchased the Union Printing Press in Gloucester St Christchurch and moved his family to Christchurch. From 1861 he was the gazetted printer to the Canterbury Provincial Government.

According to the Avon electoral roll Charles had his home in Gloucester St Christchurch, with 2 acres of land at Papanui Bush. In 1863 he and his family moved to Nelson and thereafter worked at the Nelson Evening Mail which was owned by his Uncle, Robert Lucas.

Charles died on December 2, 1897 in Stepneyville, Nelson, South Island, New Zealand, aged 61.

Mr Charles Lucas, of Stepneyville, a very old colonist of 45 years standing and formerly well known in connection with the New Zealand printing trade, died last night at the age of 61. He came to the colony in the early days and many years ago he was manager of the "Lyttelton Times," Christchurch. He was in Nelson for over 30 years till his death The deceased has left a widow and a large family, all grown up He was a nephew of the late Mr R. Lucas, founder of the " Nelson Evening Mail" and a cousin of the present proprietors. The funeral is announced for Sunday afternoon. [2]

The remains of the late Mr Charles Lucas were buried in the New Cemetery yesterday afternoon, the service at the grave being read by the Rev F Bennet, and the Rev T. Bray. The Port choir, of which Mr Lucas had been conductor, sang some beautiful and appropriate hymns, Mrs Langridge accompanying on the harmonium, and the staff of the " Mail " office attended as a last mark of respect to their deceased companion. The flags at the Port were at half-mast during the day, as a tribute to the memory of a very old resident. [3]
