kept extensive journal up to 1950's, age 90's

from Carrie Ann Partridge, abt 1950:

I, Carrie Ann Lucas Partridge have accumulated this data since I was a young woman and I think it is very correct.

from John LeRoy Humbert, Jr., Feb 1999:

The most interesting notes on the cryptic timeline to me are in 1882. "Cousin Ed" and "Normal". This is because in 1882 William Lucas visited from Iowa to L.A. Carrie kind of apologizes for not getting family data from him. Understandable as she was only 17. I wonder if the notation on Cousin Ed is tied to the visit by Wm.? Is one of the records in error? Don't know. The notation "Normal" would indicate to me that Carrie entered normal school that year. It was not uncommon for young ladies who finished highschool (usually at about the age of 16) to go to normal school for 2 or more years and then go into teaching. Carries says she graduated in 1888 and taught at Red Oak (?) in 1889. She does not mention Ada's marriage.

I think the 1886 notation refers to a move Carrie made while in school, not to a move by the Lucas family. I believe the events in the time line pretty much apply only to Carrie unless otherwise noted. Cryptic notes such as "to Iowa City" and "in L.A." were intended to jog her memory as she wrote her journal, so we can't build too many theories on what she may have meant.

I sure wish the things that Carrie lists as "on file" were available. She had a gray steel file box that had her copies of stock certificates from the late 1800's early 1900's, and I suspect had other things she mentions. Perhaps Al's daughter Phyllis ended up with it. I've not seen or heard from her since Carrie died or earlier (I was a pall bearer at the funeral and sitting in the front during the funeral/burial, didn't see everyone in the crowd. I assume Phyllis was there).

Here is a tidbit from mo own memory, an event that took place at the First Baptist Church on Redwood Rd. in Castro Valley when Aunt Carrie was in her 90's. > > We were members of the church as were the Partridges, Al was an usher. Aunt Carrie had not come to church for quite a long time as her sight and hearing were both poor and it was difficult for her to negotiate unfamiliar territory. > > Every year at Mother's Day, it was usual for the Rev. (Radcliff at that time I think) to have all the mothers in the congregation stand, then seat them by saying "All those under 30 please sit" etc. etc. until only one was left standing. For many years this had been a woman then about 90 years old. I no longer remember her name, but she was not the nicest of people and it always detracted from the whole thing that the last person left standing was in fact rather a nasty one. > > One year Al and the current pastor put their heads together and brought in Aunt Carrie (I think she was about 95 at the time, but not sure), and seated her near the back.  When the usual ceremony was completed, and the usual senior mother left standing up front and looking very smug, the Reverend then added "Now all those under 95 please sit. This caused quite a comotion (Baptists are easily aroused) and heads turned until Carrie was seen at the back of the church with Al holding her steady. Applause and cheering are not always out of place in church. > > Some might think the whole episode lacked charity, I think it was rather a form of education for all who experienced it. >

Got to come home for this weekend, and had the following waiting for me;

"Jan 31, 2000

"Dear John & Family

"After my Dad (Al Partridge) & Mother were divorced, I lived with grandma Partridge (Carrie Lucas) a lot during summer vacations and on week-ends.

I lived with aunt Ada with my grandma & Dad one summer. She was so nice to me. I think it was after my grandma sold her home in Oakland and had a hard time getting relocated.

The return address on the envelope is Phillis Carstensen

from Carole Elizabeth Bartlett MacKay, Feb 1999:

Carrie attended Iowa City Academy and graduated in 1887. She obtained a district school.

[1889] Fanny supported family now entirely from store. Fanny & Carrie sold store after JHL left & moved to Red Oak, IA.

Carrie obtained a position as school teacher in suburbs of Red Oak and was just in line for a city school when she seemed to require a change of climate and accordingly sent to LA and stayed with her friend, Mary Penman.

1891 Great alarm was felt as to Fanny's health and Carrie came home from Calif. [to NE]

[1897] Farina & 'Judge' [Fenita] went to live with Carrie. Then Carrie moved to Peidmont Ave. in Oakland with Farina and Judge. Judge went to high school and graduated there.

[John L. Humbert, Jr..FTW]

BIO:Carrie was born NOV.13, 1865, half a year after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. My first memory of her, she was sharing an apartment in Oakland, Calif. with one of her sisters (I believe Effie Eliza Lucas). Her son Alfred built a house on Redwood Road in Castro Valley Calif., and Carrie spent her last years there with Alfred and his second wife (Mary Louise Galer). Carrie was very nearly blind, and very hard of hearing in her last years, and for safety reasons could not be left alone. As a teenager, I sometimes kept Carrie company when Al and Mary-Lou were away. Carrie would tell me stories of her (and my grandmother Ada's) childhood days, she remembered best their experiences in the 1870's in Elko, Nevada, and in southern California. Carrie compiled a great deal of genealogy in a hand-written journal, which has survived to this time, in it she mentions a great number of documents that were apparently in her possession at one time, but if they survive, they were not with the journal when it was found in 1992. A great deal of Carrie's interest in family history seems to have revolved around her hope that unclaimed property or wealth would be found, family stories abound with tales of donated properties that should revert to heirs, unclaimed wealth and even buried treasure (the buried treasure story appears to have been true, See biography of John Lucas). Carrie appears to have added information to her journal from perhaps as early as 1890, up to about 1951. Carrie's father liquidated the family 's vast land holdings, and invested the money in stocks. Stacks of the worthless certificates were around when I was a youngster, but I don't know what became of them. They were primarily stocks in gold and copper mining and oil exploration companies. The only company name that I remember is the Globe Copper Mine in Arizona. Many of the stocks had John Henry Lucas listed on them as an officer of the company. The face value of the stocks was several million dollars. I believe that at the least, Carrie and Ada Lucas each had one of these bundles of certificates. I do not know if other children of "Henry" (or his siblings) had some also. John L. Humbert, Jr. -1992-
