Ellen Lucas was born on 8 Jan 1837 in Eccleston, Lancashire. She was the daughter of John and Margaret Lucas. She was christened on 26 Feb 1837 at Rainford Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. Her father's occupation was recorded as farmer, and the family's address as Eccleston.

By June 6th 1841, the family was living in Catchey Moss, Eccleston; John was a farmer. There were three agricultural labourers and a female servant also in the household.

Ellen's mother died in 1850, and was buried on 16 May 1850 at Rainford Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire; her age was recorded as 43, and her address as St Helens.

Ellen married Joseph Morris in 1854 at Manchester Cathedral. He was 30 and widowed, she was 20 and hadn't been married before; she was living at 11 Albert Street, he was at 17 Albert Street. Joseph was a joiner. Their fathers were named as Joseph Morris (engineer) and John Lucas (farmer).
