John Norton Luce was in the Civil War. He enlisted in the military 18 Jan 1864 and there is a record of service dated 26 Sep 1865. He was a Private in Company I, 3rd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery Regiment. The members of company I, otherwise known as the 13th Unattached Company, were employed at the National Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts. They were mechanics and skilled engineers so became a part of the Army of the James and built roads and bridges. They also held the pontoon bridge across the James River during the Siege of Petersburg.[22][23]
He was discharged 26 Sep 1865, part of the last group of men mustered out.[24][23] He received a pension of $38 starting 10 Jun 1918 and it increased to $50 on 1 May 1920.[25] There is a Civil War MonumentCivil War Monument in Edgartown with his name on it and there is actually a photo of him in front of the dedication of a World War Monument in Tisbury, honoring him as one of the last living Civil War Veterans in Martha's Vineyard in the Martha's Vineyard Museum Quarterly.[26][27]
Career
John was a teamster after the war and he worked on roads.[28][29] By 10 Jun 1918, he was listed as an "Army Invalid" and received a pension but the 1920 census still lists him as working.[25][30]

Death
He passed away 10 Sep 1925 in Tisbury, Dukes, Massachusetts from arteriosclerosis and "new growth on bladder."[37]He is buried at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Vineyard Haven, Dukes, Massachusetts.[38][39]
