Is Engineer Better Off Than Industrial Worker?
Editor, The Pittsburgh Press:
I think Mr. Robert P. Goldstein ["Engineer Shortage Blamed on Pay Loss," May , 21] in his rosy picture of the engineer who has his education paid for in 11 years, has overlooked a couple of points.
The interest on $24,000 is a tidy sum, so you do not pay off principal and interest In 11 years with the assumed salary advantage of $2200 per year.
More important is the question of age. A boy normally gets out of high school at 18, finishes a turn with the Army at 20, gets his engineering degree at 24, and 11 years later has only the interest, say $7000, on his education to pay to be on a par, with the industrial worker.
This could be done in a little over three years, except that he is now 35, jobs are hard to get beyond that age, he is on salary so he can be fired for any or no reason.
How can you figure that he is as well off as the industrial worker with pension, hospitalization and insurance benefits, not just momentarily but permanently assured, seniority as job tenure protection, and a union to protect him against . health hazards and arbitrary actions of his superiors?

1962-Sep-18, “Pittsburgh Post-Gazette”

Some weeks ago we discussed the expression "He cooked his own goose," noting that one of its first appearances in print was in a street ballad of 1851 vintage. Now Clark C. Luce of Ashtabula, Ohio, points out that it is really much older than that and cites a speech by the porter in Macbeth: "Knock- knock, knock. Who's there? Faith, here's an English tailor come hither, for stealing out of a French hose. Come in, tailor; here you may roast your goose."
"The play on the word 'goose' as either a fowl or a large pressing iron," continues Mr. Luce, "indicates that the audience was acquainted with the expression in its usual sense. Strange that it does not occur elsewhere in writing of the period.
"I read Macbeth in high school in 1915. The teaching in those days must have been pretty good to stay with me so long!" [3]
