Biography

Philura/Philena Luce was born on 2 Nov 1833.[1] She was the daughter of Jonathan Luce and Eliza Bryar.[2]

Philura Luce of Anson, Maine, married Sanborn L. Viles of Industry, Maine, on 24 June 1852 at North Anson. The ceremony was performed by Thomas Gray, Justice of the Peace.[3] He died of fever on 5 Aug 1863 at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, during the American Civil War.[3] Based on census, military pernsion and other records, they had four children:

  • Wilson Graton Viles, b. 31 March 1854[4]; d. 5 Jun 1912 Boston, Massachusetts[5][3]
  • Eliza J Viles, b. 22 Sep 1857[6][3]
  • Marcellus Viles, b. 17 June 1860[3]
  • Sanborn L. Viles, b. 2 June 1862[3]

In 1860, Philena and Sanborn Viles lived in Anson, Somerset, Maine, with two sons. Sanborn was a farmer. Although Sanborn in clearly the head of Household, he is shown as part of the family listed above.[7]

Philura received a pension for the Civil War service of her husband, Sanborn L. Viles[3] The pension file shows that there were four dependent children of Sanborn L Viles and Philura Luce: Wilson, Eliza, Marcellus and Sanborn. Orin Hall of New Vineyard, Maine, was appointed Guardian of the children. The children gradually aged of the pension benefits: Wilson on 30 March 1870, Eliza on 21 Sept 1873, Marcellus on 16 June 1876, and Sanborn on 1 June 1878.

Philura remarried on 2 Jan 1868 to George Hight, and her pension was discontinued.[3]

George Hight died on 17 July 1896, and in 1901, Philura applied for restoration of her pension based on Sanborn Viles' Civil War service. At the time, she was a resident of Madison, Somerset County, Maine. She stated that she had no income and was keeping house for hewr son, Austin S. Viles.[3]

Philura Hight died on 29 Apr 1908[1] and is buried at the Sunset Cemetery, North Anson, Somerset, Maine.[1]
