John was born in Westport St Mary, Malmesbury, Wiltshire, England on 4th February 1870. He was the son of Charles Richard Luce and his wife Mary (nee Visger). [1]
At the 1871 Census John was living with his parents and older brothers at Westport St Mary. [2] When he was older John attended Clifton College, Bristol. [3]
On 5th January 1902 John married Mary Dorothea Tucker at Melcombe Regis, Dorset. [4] [5] The couple had four sons: Alfred Cecil (born 1903), John David (1906), William Henry Tucker (1907) and Edward Launcelot (1907).
John Luce joined the Royal Navy as a naval cadet in January 1883. He was promoted to lieutenant on 1 January 1892.
In June 1909, Luce was promoted to captain. His commands from this point onwards were:
Pre-dreadnought HMS Hibernia (1910–1912)
Light cruiser HMS Glasgow (1912–1916)
Central Depot and Training Establishment (1917–1918)
Dreadnought HMS Ramillies (1919–1920)
Flag Officer, Malta (1921–1924)
From September 1912, Luce took command of HMS Glasgow, a light cruiser, and was still in command at the start of the First World War. In November 1914, he took part in the Battle of Coronel in the South Atlantic, during which the British cruisers Good Hope and Monmouth were sunk by the German East Asia Squadron under the command of Vice Admiral Graf von Spee.
In December 1914, Luce, still commanding Glasgow, took part in the Battle of the Falkland Islands. During the battle the Glasgowand HMS Cornwall sank the German cruiser SMS Liepzig. On 15th March 1915, Luce cornered SMS Dresden, which was scuttled by her crew.
In February 1919, Luce took command of HMS Ramillies and remained as captain until 1920. On 7th December 1921, Luce was appointed Rear-Admiral n Charge, Malta and Admiral Superintendent of Malta Dockyard. [6]
On 1st April 1930 John Luce was promoted to Admiral on the Retired List. [7] He died at home on 22nd September 1932. [8]
He commemorated by a plaque in Malmesbury Abbey, Wiltshire. [9]
